Lesson 15

Ahora, en inglés: I'm reading a horror book -  He said (that) he was reading a horror book.

Presta atención: I tell you what you must do: Te digo lo que debes hacer. He told me what I had to do: Me dijo lo que yo tenía que hacer. I'll tell Peter about the problem: Le diré a Peter lo del problema. Tell necesita un pronombre personal acusativo (me, you, him, her, it, us, you, them) o el nombre de la persona a la que se dirige. El verbo say funciona un poco distinto: He said to me that the lift was out of order: Me dijo que el ascensor estaba averiado. He said (that) the lift was out of order: Él dijo que el ascensor estaba averiado. Recuerda: he said to me (me dijo), he said that (dijo que).

I speak Spanish. He said (that) he spoke Spanish. Yo hablo español. Él dijo que hablaba español.

I am playing the violin. She said (that) she was playing the violin. Estoy tocando el violín. Ella dijo que estaba tocando el violín.

We have been to Dublin this week. He told me (that) they had been to Dublin that week.

You have been a pain in the neck ever since the day you were born! He said (that) I had been a pain in the neck ever since the day I was born.

She bought a book for her fiancé. She told me (that) she had bought a book for her fiancé.
He told me (that) she had bought a book for him. Ten en cuenta que también podrías encontrarte con la frase: She bought her fiancé a book: Ella compró un libro a su prometido. O sea, es lo mismo I bought him a book que I bought a book for him.

I was taking care of her. He explained (that) he had been taking care of her.

I have been living in Spain for 13 years. He said (that) he had been living in Spain for 13 years.

I will help you. She promised me (that) she would help me. Yo te ayudaré. Ella me prometió que me ayudaría.
Según quién lo cuente, puede variar la frase: She said that she would help him: Ella dijo que le ayudaría. También puedes usar el verbo tellShe told me that she would help me: Ella me dijo que me ayudaría.

I am going to join the battle with Dexter in the Senate. He announced (that) he was going to join the battle with Dexter in the Senate.

Observa esta, por ejemplo: If the floods get worse, we will have to leave the house (estilo directo): Si las inundaciones empeoran, vamos a tener que salir de la casa. He said that if the floods got worse, they would have to leave the house (estilo indirecto): Dijo que si las inundaciones empeoraran, tendrían que salir de la casa.

I can do whatever I want. He said (that) he could do whatever he wanted.

Ross may ring today. He said (that) Ross might ring that day.

They must stay calm. She reminded them (that) they had to stay calm.

They should clean this street. I said (that) they should clean the street. Deberían limpiar esta calle. Dije que deberían limpiar la calle.

Cuando hagas una frase en estilo indirecto, pon atención a los adverbios de tiempo (now, then, before...), los pronombres (I-me, he-his, she-her...) y los adjetivos demostrativos (this, that...) que vayas a usar: today pasaría a ser that day; yesterday sería the day before; tomorrow - the next day / the following day; next week - the following week; a year ago a year before / the previous year; here - there; now - then; this - that; these - those; tonight - that night; today - that day... Presta especial atención a la siguiente frase:

My grandfather died a year ago. He said (that) his grandfather died a year before/the previous year.

Sean informed me that Prudence had gone to a convent.

She warned them that they could lose their children.

Our French teacher explained us that "pain" in French means bread.

I speak Spanish. He said he spoke Spanish.
I am playing the violin. She said she was playing the violin.
We have been to Dublin this week. He told me they had been to Dublin that week.
You have been a pain in the neck ever since the day you were born! He said I had been a pain in the neck ever since the day I was born.
She bought a book for her fiancé. She told me she had bought a book for her fiancé.
I was taking care of her. He explained he had been taking care of her.
I have been living in Spain for 13 years. He said he had been living in Spain for 13 years.
I will help you. She promised me she would help me.
I am going to join the battle with Dexter in the Senate. He announced he was going to join the battle with Dexter in the Senate.
I can do whatever I want. He said he could do whatever he wanted.
Ross may ring today. He said Ross might ring that day.
They must stay calm. She reminded them they had to stay calm.
They should clean this street. I said they should clean the street.
My grandfather died  a year ago. He said his grandfather died a year before.
Sean informed me that Prudence had gone to a convent.
She warned them that they could lose their children.
Our French teacher explained us that "pain" in French means bread.
